I work feverishly, combing through archives and articles. You’re not a historian, you’re a designer, I remind myself. But the stories I am reading are riveting. I have to lay down sometimes when it gets too sad. Then I get up and think about how to tell their stories. I am inspired, hopeful. I want to fill this tiny zine with all of it, and my fingers are flying across the keyboard.

“Rent Parties”, Substack, Stephanie Ogura

On a Saturday night (and then eventually Thursday nights too), Harlem residents would find their way to private apartments with a brightly colored stub of paper in hand, both an ad and a ticket. With an admission of around 25 cents, the partygoer would have access to live music, food, and homemade liquor (the Prohibition was from 1920-1933), and the party host would generate money to help pay rent.
